Monday Morsels: Controlling the Controllables

Narrow your focus and forget the rest

This Week’s Focus: Controlling the Controllables

In the unpredictable world of sports, learning to focus on what you can control can be your greatest strategy for success.

1 Inspirational Quote

"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do."

John Wooden, legendary basketball coach and player

1 Quick, Practical Way to Build or Test

Create a two-column list. On one side, write down aspects of your sport that are within your control (training intensity, nutrition, mindset, etc.). On the other, list the factors beyond your control (opponents' performance, weather conditions, referee decisions). When you’re done, tear the paper into the two columns. Flush the list of things out of your control down the toilet! Commit to spending the next week focusing solely on elements in the first column, noting any changes in your stress levels, focus, and overall performance.
